High, AR - Carroll County
History of High
Located about 4 miles north of Urbanette on Big Indian Creek, the historic town of High was named after John and Amelia High's family that had settled in the area. John died in about 1845. The town's post office was established on May 7, 1907 and by 1920 a more permanent stone building had been constructed. Frederick G. High served as the first and only postmaster until the High Post Office closed on March 31, 1942. Near the historic High family home, the town also built its own little white church with the High Cemetery behind it, and there was also a small school house - so small that stories tell of students having to sit and listen to the teacher from outside.
